A number generator can be used to create ordered lists or random values, and can be used for lots of different applications that require lists of numbers. A great example of a number generator that produces numbers in a fixed order, as noted in the example provided, is a sequential number generator. Many others prefer to use tools like a sequential numbers generator within the Microsoft Excel application because Excel can create ordered lists with the use of formulas. These tools allow for the organizational, testing, and calculation aspects of the number generators and fully utilize the features of generating of numbers, almost all of the number generators and sequential number generators are free and simple to use.

The number generators can also create numbers in a random manner and do not produce numbers in a fixed order. A random sequence generator produces lists that are randomly shuffled. A number generator that produces numbers that are in a specified range, such as 1 to 100 and 1 to 3, would be great for games, sampling, or the making of uninformed decisions. Many people prefer to use random number generators with the range from 0 to 9 that also do not repeat, or from 1 to 10 that also do not repeat. These generators are great for selection games and for quizzes or lottery number selection where duplicate numbers are not allowed.

These types of number generators are commonly used in a number of different applications, but they shine in math applications and within the existing gaming or teaching applications. Each of the number generators discussed can be used to generate ordered lists, solve a math problem, create an application that generates numbers in a very short range (as noted in the example of 1 to 2 to indicate either in random order or decision making). From very simple to very advanced applications, they can be dynamically used to meet a range of needs and therefore are still used in a number of applications where users categorized lists of numbers because they still offer a simple and fast way to create ordered and random needs.
